## FAQ
### COLOR

**Q: What is an impasto color?**
An impasto color is a clay brick that is the same color through the entire body of the brick; from the exposed face to the body.

**Q: What is an engobed brick?**
An engobed brick has an exterior color that is different from the color of the body. This is achieved by applying a ceramic engobe during the manufacturing process that is attached to the body of the Brick during the firing process to create a permanent ceramic finish. The coating will not fade or change over time.

**Q: Does the color of the brick fade?**
Unlike concrete products, the colors of terracotta bricks do not fade.

### WHAT IT LOOKS LIKE

**Q: What are bricks made of?**
Bricks are made of clay and other minerals that are molded into the shape of the "brick," then "fired" at temperatures of up to 1,200°C. There is a very complex science behind the making of a brick, so depending on the production facility the type from the materials and the technology used changes.

**Q: Why do bricks have different sizes?**
Brick sizes have changed throughout history and are related to a country's tradition. In most cases the length of a brick is twice its width plus the width of a mortar joint. In our range we have a wide variety of sizes to provide different aesthetic options and to meet the needs of each country.

**Q: Why do some bricks cost more than others if they are all made of clay?**
In most cases the price difference is due to the area of origin of the clay (domestic or international origin and cost of the clay itself) and the treatments to which products of certain lines are subjected after the first firing cycle.

### HOW TO CHOOSE A BRICK

**Q: Why do I need to see a physical sample?**
Photo and catalog printing have an infinite number of color variables. Physical samples allow you to see the true color of the brick in natural light. It is important to get a set of samples of the brick you want to use, from the production batch available at that time. The good news is that this service is free; simply request a sample and we will send it to you by courier.

**Q: Why are there differences between production batches?**
Bricks are natural products, the clay in the sampling pit may be slightly different color depending on the location. As much as the firing process, temperature and environment inside the kiln are controlled they may change slightly from time to time. It is important to request a sample of the brick you wish to use from the production batch available at that time. It is essential to order all the material needed to complete the job from a single production batch.

**Q: My bricks look different on this wall than on that wall - why?**
The simple answer is light. A south-facing wall will have full sunlight, making it brighter, and a south-facing wall with less light will appear darker.

**Q: What is the exposed face of a brick?**
The "face to view" of a brick is the side designed to be seen. Almost all of our bricks have both "faces" in view as the ends called "heads." Some of our bricks have an exposed face, so ask a team member to clarify which bricks it is.

### CUSTOMIZATION

**Q: Can you replicate this brick?**
Through our experience and the different production processes at our disposal we are able to replicate bricks in color and finish. Send us a photo and dimensions of the brick you are trying to replicate.

### MORTAR & JOINT

**Q: What do I need to know about mortar?**
The choice of mortar color depends on personal preference. Take the time to visualize mortar and brick color combinations. We recommend using pre-mixed bagged mortars, click here for more information https://santanselmo.it/prodotti-complementari/accessori-e-malte. Mortar accounts for about 18 percent of the overall appearance of the brick veneer, so there is a substantial difference in color to the eye using a white-colored mortar, for example, versus a black mortar. This can completely change the appearance of the brick.

**Q: What kind of joint do you recommend?**
The shape of the joint greatly influences the appearance of the facade. The thickness of the joint plays a key role, but the depth is also important. A hollowed-out joint creates a shadow play between the joint and the brick varying the appearance of the masonry during various phases of the day. There are several types of joints, and our customer service team is available to advise you based on the type of brick you choose.

### WARRANTY

**Q: What guarantee do your products have?**
All of our bricks come with a 25-year warranty. Request our warranty form for more information.

**Q: Should I treat bricks?**
Clay bricks should NOT be treated with water-repellent products. Due to its natural porosity, the brick "breathes" allowing water to migrate in and out of it. Any water-repellent treatment blocks this property with consequences of crystallization within the brick and exfoliation. Fornace S.Anselmo is not liable for any damage caused by the application of water-repellent substances to the brickwork.
